Kandy Viewpoint is also known as Arthur’s Seat and said to be the highest point in Kandy. The viewpoint is located above the Kandy lake in Rajapihilla Mawatha, 550 m above the sea level.

Historical background

The World Heritage city; Kandy which you can see from the viewpoint has a great historic value mainly due to its geographic location. It was a natural fortress of defense for many kings of Sri Lanka during the periods of invasion.

The city along with the king’s palace and the shrine for the sacred Tooth Relic which is the palladium of the rulers has been built in this valley surrounded by three mountain ranges namely Udawaththe Kele, Hanthana mountain range and Bahirawakanda mountain range.

Best time to Visit

It is one of the most loved places for tourists to take photographs while enjoying the panoramic view. Anytime is favourable to visit this place if you can spare around 10 to 15 minutes.

However, morning sunrise and the evening sunset would be great timing.

How to reach the Kandy Viewpoint

From Kandy city, you have to take the Rajapihilla Mawatha; a steep road, along which you will have to go around 1 km and totally around 1.6 km from the city center to reach the viewpoint. You can either take a leisurely walk or take a tuk tuk to reach your destination in a few minutes.

There are few souvenir shops and art galleries on your way to the viewpoint, alongside the road and adjacent to the viewpoint.

If you walk along the Rajapihilla Mawatha towards the view point you can also easily find good accommodation with almost the same kind of panoramic view of Kandy city.
